According to multiple sources, Alekxei Pino, who suffered a partial leg amputation following a car accident involving NBA player Haywood Highsmith, has filed a lawsuit against Highsmith.
TMZ was the first to report that Pino initiated legal action in a Florida court, seeking damages exceeding $50,000. Pino, aged 21, was assisting a stranded driver on February 6 when Highsmith collided with the disabled vehicle, striking Pino who was standing nearby.
The lawsuit alleges that Highsmith, returning from a game at Kesaya Center in Miami, was speeding, causing the accident resulting in Pino’s amputation. Highsmith, who was driving a 2021 Audi, was cited for careless driving by Miami-Dade Police, with reports indicating he was slightly over the speed limit.
TMZ suggested Highsmith may have been distracted. The lawsuit contends Pino sustained additional serious injuries requiring multiple medical procedures.
Pino’s attorney, Manuel Dobrinsky, stated that his client remains hospitalized, emphasizing Pino’s altruistic intentions in assisting the stranded motorist and lamenting the tragic outcome.
Highsmith’s agent, Jerry Dianis, claimed Highsmith rendered aid immediately after the accident, applying a tourniquet and offering support until medical assistance arrived.
