Missouri employed ‘The Team’ strategy, and Michigan executed a flawless response.
Missouri Tigers achieved a feat Michigan also accomplished this season—they defeated the Ohio State Buckeyes. While this similarity and their shared use of “Block M” logos are notable, further comparisons between the two programs should likely cease. Nevertheless, Missouri went a step further on social media by invoking a famous quote attributed to former Michigan head coach Schembechler: “The team, the team, the team.”
Missouri’s tweet prompted numerous responses from Michigan fans on social media. In response, Michigan issued a subtler tweet on Wednesday afternoon, stating, “Imitated, but never duplicated.” The tweet showcased Michigan’s practice field, locker room door, and the Michigan Stadium, all of which pay homage to Schembechler’s mantra.
“The team, the team, the team” has always resonated with Michigan supporters, particularly during the Jim Harbaugh era. While Missouri’s tweet may not have caused harm, using a quote closely associated with the University of Michigan might not have been the most effective social media strategy.
