Rams Add Tom Brady’s Former Coach to Sean McVay’s Coaching Staff

The Los Angeles Rams continue to round out their coaching staff, with former Las Vegas Raiders tight end coach Jerry Schuplinski poised to join as a senior offensive assistant, according to Ian Rapoport. This addition follows shortly after Rams head coach Sean McVay announced several other coaching hires earlier in the offseason. The Rams have been working to fill multiple vacancies on their staff, particularly after defensive coordinator Raheem Morris departed, leaving the staff short-handed, and other teams sought to recruit rising stars from McVay’s coaching tree.

Schuplinski played a significant role in the impact rookie Michael Mayer had on the Raiders’ offense, despite Mayer dealing with injuries. Mayer managed to score twice while recording 27 catches and 304 yards. Although Schuplinski focused on tight ends last season, his coaching career has predominantly involved assisting quarterbacks, including the legendary Tom Brady.

Schuplinski began his coaching journey at John Carroll in the early 2000s before transitioning to a head coaching role at the high school level from 2002 to 2006. Following six seasons as a special teams coach for Case Western Reserve, he made the leap to the professional ranks, joining former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick. During his time with the Patriots, Schuplinski won three Super Bowls and served as an offensive assistant for three seasons, followed by three seasons as the assistant quarterbacks coach. He held the same position in 2019 with the Miami Dolphins before spending two years as the quarterbacks coach for the New York Giants, where he contributed to the development of young passer Daniel Jones. Schuplinski then served as a senior offensive assistant coach for the Raiders for a year before taking charge of the tight end room.

Schuplinski brings a wealth of coaching experience to Los Angeles, which may prove invaluable during the Rams’ transitional phase. Should the Rams seek to find a successor to quarterback Matthew Stafford in this year’s NFL Draft, Schuplinski is likely to play a key role in the newcomer’s development.
