The Rams have parted ways with a former standout player from Michigan State who also boasts a Super Bowl victory.
Los Angeles released the center, a former standout at Michigan State, on Wednesday following his six-season tenure with the team. Despite being a starter during the 2021 season, which culminated in a Super Bowl victory, Allen struggled with multiple injuries both before and after that successful year.
During his time with the Rams, Allen participated in 50 regular-season games, making 32 starts. However, his appearances were limited last season, with only five games played and a mere 34 offensive snaps, as reported by Pro Football Focus.
Part of a notable football family, Allen was the second of three brothers to anchor Michigan State’s offensive line. He made his mark early on, earning recognition as a Freshman All-American after featuring in 12 games during his debut season in 2014. Subsequently, he solidified his role as a starter alongside his older brother Jack Allen, a distinguished All-American. Together, they propelled the Spartans to a Big Ten title and a spot in the College Football Playoff. Throughout his collegiate career, Allen amassed 38 starts in 51 games, showcasing his versatility across center and both guard positions.
Selected by the Rams in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL draft, Allen quickly ascended to a starting role. However, he faced adversity, missing the entire 2020 season due to a knee injury. Despite this setback, he made a triumphant return, contributing to the Rams’ Super Bowl triumph in 2021 and earning recognition as a Pro Bowl alternate. His stellar performance earned him a lucrative three-year, $18 million extension in 2022.
In the 2022 season, Allen battled knee and thumb injuries, starting in all seven games he appeared in. However, the Rams opted to rely on Coleman Shelton as the starting center, relegating Allen to a backup role.
