According to a recent article by Gilberto Manzano of Sports Illustrated, each team in the NFC South should consider specific moves during the offseason. For the Carolina Panthers, the suggested move is to acquire a wide receiver.
Manzano proposes Tee Higgins from the Cincinnati Bengals as the ideal choice. The Panthers are seen as desperately needing a top-tier wide receiver to support their 2023 first-round pick, Young, who faced challenges in his rookie season partly due to the lack of playmakers in Carolina.
If Higgins becomes available, Manzano advises the Panthers to make every effort to sign him, highlighting Higgins’ potential as a primary target, demonstrated through his performances alongside Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase in Cincinnati.
However, while acknowledging the benefits of adding Higgins to the Panthers’ offense, there are concerns about the potential cost. There’s also the scenario where the Bengals could use the franchise tag on Higgins and then trade him, requiring not just a substantial contract but also draft compensation.
If the Bengals allow Higgins to enter free agency, the proposition becomes more enticing, though the financial aspect remains a crucial factor. The Panthers must not hastily allocate funds to a receiver when their offensive issues are more comprehensive.
In 2023, Higgins recorded 42 receptions for 656 yards and five touchdowns in eleven games. In the preceding two seasons, he achieved over 1,000 receiving yards each year with 74 receptions.
