Steelers Designated as Destination for Lions Standout Defensive Back

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers are gearing up to address various positions during the offseason, seeking to plug gaps on both offense and defense. Among their priorities is likely the safety position, and they may have their sights set on an NFC standout to bolster their roster.

According to Pro Football Network, the Steelers have been identified as a potential destination for Detroit Lions safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, who is 26 years old and entering his sixth NFL season. With 12 interceptions to his name already, Gardner-Johnson could be a valuable addition to Pittsburgh’s defense, especially considering his impressive performance just a year ago when he led the league with six picks and achieved a career-high 67 tackles.

As per PFN’s analysis, the Steelers might be in the market for a replacement for slot corner Chandon Sullivan, who is approaching free agency, and they could also be seeking an upgrade at second safety alongside Minkah Fitzpatrick. Gardner-Johnson, despite missing most of the 2023 season due to a pectoral injury, could fill both roles and is expected to command a reasonable contract, perhaps in the range of $6-8 million for one year.

Gardner-Johnson’s truncated 2023 season saw him play just three games before his injury, but he made a return for the playoffs, aiding the Lions in their journey to the NFC Championship game. With his impending free agency and the potential fit within the Steelers’ budget, Gardner-Johnson could offer Pittsburgh the youthful talent they seek to complement Fitzpatrick in the secondary.
