The suspension of Big Dom had a notable effect on Nick Sirianni.

During a period when FS1 host Craig Carton hinted at a potentially scandalous “real reason” for the Eagles’ downfall in 2023, long-time Eagles reporter Derrick Gunn provided a more tangible explanation, albeit less sensational. According to Gunn, the sidelining of Eagles security chief Dom DiSandro, known as “Big Dom,” after he made contact with 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw during a December 3 game against San Francisco, disrupted coach Nick Sirianni’s equilibrium. Gunn’s post on X indicated that “Big Dom” typically “manages Sirianni’s emotions on the sideline” and that “in his absence, Nick engages in numerous arguments with players/coaches during games.” Following the suspension of Big Dom, which lasted for the remainder of the regular season, the Eagles experienced a sharp decline. They managed to win only one more game and ultimately lost the division title to the Cowboys. Sirianni himself acknowledged feeling “too tense” during the lone victory, which occurred on Christmas against the Giants.

Nick Sirianni, as a head football coach and team leader, should ideally possess the ability to manage situations on the sidelines and foster positive relationships with his players and assistants without relying on external factors such as a large Italian man to regulate his emotions. While it’s natural for coaches to be passionate, if that fervor becomes counterproductive and the head coach isn’t effectively leading the team, questions may arise regarding their effectiveness in their role. This sentiment somewhat ironically echoes the inquiry posed by T Mac during a press conference, akin to asking the football version of “what exactly do you contribute here?”

Regarding the 2024 NFL Draft positions of need, the Philadelphia Eagles could potentially undergo significant changes in their running back corps for the upcoming season. With D’Andre Swift, Boston Scott, and Rashaad Penny all set to become unrestricted free agents this offseason, the running back room may see a complete overhaul. Despite Swift’s impressive performance in 2023, where he ranked fifth in rushing yards and earned a Pro Bowl selection, it’s uncertain if the Eagles will offer him the contract he desires. Penny, who had minimal involvement last season despite being signed as a contributing player, is also likely to seek opportunities elsewhere. While Scott has excelled as the RB3 for the Eagles, particularly against the New York Giants, it’s possible the team will seek younger and more talented options in the draft or free agency. Kenny Gainwell still has a year left on his contract, suggesting he’ll return for the upcoming season unless unforeseen circumstances arise. Lew Nichols III, who spent last season on the practice squad, may find himself in a similar position this year. With the unpredictable nature of Howie Roseman’s decision-making, the Eagles’ approach to addressing their running back situation remains uncertain.
