Devoted fans in Super Bowl limbo or ardent supporters in the league’s frosty embrace: NRL versus NFL… which group exhibits greater fanaticism?

Sports enthusiasts worldwide invest considerable emotion, finances, and time in fervently supporting their favorite teams and athletes week after week.

Both the NRL and NFL boast dedicated fan bases that exemplify this commitment, with examples ranging from Buffalo Bills aficionados in New York engaging in fiery pre-game rituals like jumping through burning tables, to the spine-tingling Viking Clap performed by Raiders supporters.

As the NRL prepares to kick off its season in the US next week, we’ve compiled a list of some of the most passionate supporters in both sports.

One group that epitomizes loyalty is the Novocastrians.

Fans of the Knights have endured over two decades of longing for success, with their last championship victory dating back to 2001.

Despite the prolonged drought, the fervor remains palpable, evident in the sold-out home games during the team’s impressive winning streak in the latter half of last season. Whether the Knights are riding high or facing challenges, their supporters faithfully fill McDonald Jones Stadium, showcasing unwavering support.

Rugby league holds significant cultural significance in Newcastle, and the sport thrives when the Knights and their fans have cause for celebration.

The New Zealand Warriors have also experienced a resurgence in fan enthusiasm.

For a period, they grappled with competition from rugby union, but the landscape shifted following the pandemic, allowing the Warriors to establish a home base once more.

A remarkable season in 2023 saw fans flocking back to Mt Smart Stadium, with the infectious ‘Up the Wahs’ movement captivating nearly all of New Zealand.

Sellout crowds and record sales at vendors’ stands became the norm, with the Warriors’ home final against the Knights marking a monumental event in the country.

Notable among the Warriors’ supporters is the Mt Smart Joker, a fixture at games for 12 years, donning the persona of the iconic supervillain. For devoted fans like him, witnessing the team’s success last season was particularly gratifying.

With the 2024 season yet to commence, the Warriors continue to ride the wave of momentum from the previous year, evident in the robust attendance of nearly 14,000 at their trial game against the Tigers.
