Steelers Defensive Leader Cam Heyward Optimistic About 2024 Following Successful Surgery
Pittsburgh Steelers’ Cam Heyward suffered a groin injury in 2023, causing him to sit out for six games. This marked the most significant amount of time he has missed since the 2016 season when a torn pectoral muscle sidelined him, preventing him from participating in an AFC Championship game. As he enters the final year of his contract in 2024, Heyward will be 35 years old. Despite his injury setbacks, he remains a cornerstone of the Steelers’ defense, serving as the team’s top defensive lineman and captain.Heyward made his comeback to the field during Week 9 of the 2023 season against the Tennessee Titans, contributing to the Steelers’ victory with a score of 20-16. He continued to play in the remaining nine games of the season, including the AFC Wild Card game where the Steelers fell to the Buffalo Bills with a score of 31-17. Recently honored with the NFL Walter Payton Man of The Year Award, Heyward underwent surgery on Monday to address the groin/core muscle injury he incurred during Week 1 against the San Francisco 49ers, as reported by Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.
Heyward appeared to be in good spirits, sharing a photo from his hospital bed on Instagram. In the caption, he expressed relief that the surgery was completed, stating, “Surgery done finally!!! Ready to get back to feeling good!” The Steelers are optimistic about their defensive captain’s recovery and aim to have him fully healed by the start of training camp.
