Shaun Maloney expresses encouragement for the Wigan Warriors prior to their World Club Challenge matchup.

The pinnacle event in club rugby league, the World Club Challenge, is scheduled for Saturday evening, with Matt Peet’s Warriors hosting the Australian NRL champions, Penrith Panthers, in England. Given the close connection between the two clubs, who share the DW Stadium and are owned by Mike Danson, Wigan Athletic’s head coach, Shaun Maloney, will be rooting for the Warriors as they aim to secure their fifth world championship, equalling a record.

Due to this tie, the League One fixture between Wigan Athletic and Cheltenham has been rescheduled 24 hours earlier to Friday, to accommodate the clash between the two rugby league champions.

Expressing his support, Maloney stated, “I’ll be there. I’m not sure if some of the team will be, but we’ve got a connection with their staff, so I’ll be there. That is an amazing game, it’s a huge game so we have to be there. I was at the Grand Final, so I’m looking forward to it. I wish them the best of luck.”

Last season, Wigan Warriors enjoyed considerable success, clinching both the League Leaders’ Shield and their sixth Super League title by defeating Catalans Dragons in the 2023 Grand Final at Old Trafford.
