Jason Demetriou, a coach known for his prolonged presence on social media, notably Twitter, decided to deactivate his account over the summer, citing a saturation of negativity and uninformed opinions as the reasons behind his departure from the platform.

Reflecting on his decision, Demetriou expressed his discomfort with the prevalent culture of criticizing others without substantial knowledge or experience. He remarked that Twitter had become a space filled with such behavior, prompting him to conclude that it was time to distance himself from it.

Demetriou was criticised for being too close to superstar Latrell Mitchell last year.

In another incident involving social media, Demetriou found himself inadvertently entangled in controversy when he liked a disparaging comment on Instagram directed towards two of his players after a loss. He immediately regretted his action, realizing the impact it could have on his relationship with the players and the team’s dynamics. Despite his apology to the affected player, the incident highlighted the pitfalls of engaging with social media, especially during challenging times.

Despite his disillusionment with Twitter, Demetriou remains active on Instagram, primarily using it to maintain connections with friends from his international coaching experiences. However, he remains critical of the influence that anonymous online commentators wield, expressing concern that media figures often use such comments to shape public opinion, despite their lack of authenticity or credibility.
