Leeds United reportedly have their sights set on bringing Kalvin Phillips back from Manchester City in the upcoming summer transfer window, contingent upon their promotion to the Premier League. Should they secure promotion, it’s anticipated that Leeds will make substantial investments in player acquisitions, with bolstering their midfield being a key priority.
The 28-year-old English midfielder left Leeds for Manchester City during the 2022 summer transfer window, joining the Premier League champions for a fee of approximately £42 million. His move was seen as providing competition for Rodri in City’s midfield. However, Phillips struggled to cement his place in Pep Guardiola’s squad upon returning from a lengthy injury and was subsequently loaned to West Ham United for six months during the January transfer window.
Reports suggest that Leeds anticipates Phillips returning to Manchester City at the end of the current season, with a permanent transfer on the cards thereafter. Despite his difficulties elsewhere, Phillips remains highly valued at Leeds, and the club is keen to negotiate a return should they secure promotion.
Daniel Farke’s Leeds currently sit in second place in the Championship standings, boosted by a notable 3-1 victory over league leaders Leicester City. Guardiola has openly expressed regret over Phillips’ situation, admitting difficulty in envisioning him in City’s future plans.
Phillips’ performances at West Ham have been underwhelming, marked by errors leading to goals and a subsequent red card. However, while a return to Leeds may appeal to him, negotiations may hinge on Phillips accepting a substantial reduction in his £140,000 per week salary.
Leeds will face Chelsea in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Wednesday night.
