Russell Wilson could potentially reconsider staying with the Denver Broncos. Despite indications of a separation between the Super Bowl-winning quarterback and the Broncos following consecutive disappointing seasons post a major trade with the Seattle Seahawks, there’s now speculation that plans might alter as the Broncos enter Sean Payton’s second season as head coach.
Reports from NFL Network Insiders suggest that the Broncos are exploring various quarterback options, including the possibility of renegotiating Russell Wilson’s contract to retain him for the 2024 season. Wilson, who celebrated his 35th birthday in November, has a contract with significant guarantees for the upcoming seasons, prompting his benching towards the end of the 2023 season.
The Broncos had previously discussed with Wilson the option of extending the deadline for certain guarantees in his contract. Although the chance of Wilson returning on revised terms seems uncertain, the Broncos could pursue renegotiation if Wilson expresses interest in remaining with the team and if mutually beneficial alternatives fail to materialize.
Sean Payton emphasized the importance of making a decision about Wilson’s future during Super Bowl 2024 week, indicating that discussions will commence promptly after the season’s conclusion. While Jarrett Stidham, who replaced Wilson after his benching, is contracted for the 2024 season, Wilson’s improved performance in the 2023 campaign compared to his initial year with the Broncos suggests potential value in retaining him.
In the 2023 season, Wilson demonstrated notable improvement, completing 66.4% of his passes for 3,070 yards, 26 touchdowns, and eight interceptions, a marked improvement from his lackluster performance in 2022.
