Flames narrowly defeat Bruins 3-2 with Kadri scoring the decisive goal in overtime.
In Calgary, Alberta, Nazem Kadri netted an unassisted goal just 3 minutes and 56 seconds into overtime, securing a 3-2 victory for the Calgary Flames against the Boston Bruins on Thursday evening.
Kadri seized the opportunity during a 3-on-1 rush, swiftly firing a shot into the far corner past Linus Ullmark moments after Jakob Markstrom denied David Pastrnak at the opposite end.
Reflecting on the intense match, Kadri commented, “I was exhausted by the end of that one, just an absolute track meet. Nice to come out on the proper side of that one. Marky made some great saves for us. Gave us the opportunity to go cash in.”
Contributing to the Flames’ success, Oliver Kylington and Martin Pospisil also found the back of the net. Markstrom’s solid goaltending with 32 saves bolstered Calgary, helping them secure their second consecutive victory following a three-game losing streak.
Kadri stands out as the Flames’ leading scorer with 50 points (20 goals, 30 assists), approaching his production from the previous season, his debut with Calgary.
Coach Ryan Huska praised Kadri’s competitive spirit, stating, “He’s one of those guys that hates to lose more than he likes to win. So that’s why I think you see him elevate his play.”
On the Bruins’ side, Charlie Coyle showcased his scoring prowess with both of Boston’s goals, extending their road point streak to 11 games (7-0-4).
“We had chances to end the game. That’s hockey. It’s an inch or two there and it’s a different story and we’re feeling great about our game,” Coyle remarked.
Despite the loss, Ullmark made 27 saves and highlighted the Bruins’ resilience, saying, “We didn’t come out the way we wanted to. We knew what needed to be done to be successful out there and we showed that in the second and the third and we battled back and stuck with it and got a point out of it.”
The Bruins overcame a 2-1 deficit in the second period, with Coyle swiftly tying the game just 2 minutes and 33 seconds into the third period with a slick backhand-to-forehand move past Markstrom, capitalizing on a breakaway opportunity created by MacKenzie Weegar’s lapse in coverage.
Kylington kick-started the scoring for Calgary at 12:55 of the first period, converting a pass from Andrei Kuzmenko with a precise shot that eluded Ullmark’s arm.
