During the initial phase of the NFL offseason, attention remains fixed on the Denver Broncos and the uncertain future of quarterback Russell Wilson. Following a turbulent season under head coach Sean Payton in Denver, speculation abounds regarding the next chapter for the nine-time Pro Bowler.
While many have begun to suggest potential landing spots for Wilson, former NFL quarterback turned ESPN analyst Tim Hasselbeck believes the situation isn’t as straightforward as it may seem.
During a segment of Get Up!, Hasselbeck discussed the potential trajectory for the Broncos’ signal caller, expressing skepticism about whether there will be ample opportunities for him in the league going forward:
If current expectations hold, it’s anticipated that the Broncos will soon part ways with Russell Wilson, incurring a significant $85 million dead cap hit. Coach Payton and the Broncos’ management will aim to secure a new quarterback around whom they can construct a successful and sustainable offensive strategy.
However, predicting Wilson’s next destination poses a challenge. While several teams in need of a quarterback could benefit from his services, it’s difficult to envision Wilson as the top choice for any team.
Wilson concluded the 2023 season with a 7-8 record as a starter, tallying 3,070 passing yards, 26 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. Despite Payton’s efforts to rejuvenate Wilson following his disappointing 2022 season, his performance may not be compelling enough to earn him another year in Denver.
Should another team seek to add depth to their quarterback roster during the summer, Wilson could be brought in to compete for a starting role during training camp. However, if teams opt for younger prospects with greater potential, Wilson could find himself without a team heading into the 2024 season.
