The Cincinnati Reds ink a deal with a former utility player from the Athletics.
The Cincinnati Reds have secured the services of Tony Kemp, a former utility player and clubhouse leader from the Oakland A’s, on a minor league contract, as reported by Jon Heyman of the New York Post. Kemp, who had been with the A’s since 2020 following a trade with the Chicago Cubs, contributed significantly during his tenure in green and gold.
Reflecting on his time with the A’s at the conclusion of the 2023 season, Kemp highlighted his favorite moments and expressed no regrets about his experience in Oakland. He emphasized the camaraderie within the team and his pride in the journey he had there.
Kemp now joins the Reds’ camp without a clear path to the roster, particularly due to uncertainties surrounding the infield, notably with Jonathan India still in the mix. While Kemp’s primary defensive position is second base, where Matt McLain had a notable rookie season, he also offers outfield versatility, primarily in left field, which is currently occupied by Spencer Steer.
Primarily serving as a veteran depth option, Kemp brings valuable clubhouse presence and leadership qualities to the Reds, traits that were highly regarded in the Oakland clubhouse last season. Despite his challenging season statistics in 2023, Kemp’s contributions extend beyond the numbers, and his signing presents a low-risk, potentially rewarding opportunity for the Reds, especially considering their hitter-friendly ballpark.
If Kemp makes it to Cincinnati, he will reunite with former Oakland teammates Sam Moll and Frankie Montas. The A’s and Reds are scheduled to face off in spring training on March 4 and March 22, with three regular-season games in August in Cincinnati.
