New Management Aims to Rectify Past Mistakes with Steelers’ Potential Move

Under the helm of new general manager Omar Khan, the Pittsburgh Steelers are on a mission to overturn a recent history marred by mediocrity and questionable offseason decisions. In his brief tenure, Khan has displayed a more proactive approach compared to his predecessor Kevin Colbert, actively pursuing free agents and engaging in trade talks. As the 2024 offseason approaches, Khan has an opportunity to address a subtle yet significant misstep from Colbert’s era, and it appears the circumstances may align in the Steelers’ favor.

The Steelers’ decision to acquire Ryan Switzer from the Oakland Raiders during the 2018 roster cutdown day didn’t initially raise eyebrows. However, Switzer failed to fulfill expectations as a special teams asset and was eventually benched in 2019 before being released ahead of the 2020 season. Additionally, the Steelers received a sixth-round pick from the Raiders, but the selection, Sutton Smith, failed to make a significant impact, further exacerbating the disappointment of the trade.

Meanwhile, the Raiders leveraged the fifth-round pick they acquired from the Steelers to draft Hunter Renfrow, who exceeded expectations by delivering a 1,000-yard season and earning a Pro Bowl nod. Despite his initial success, Renfrow’s playing time diminished due to injuries and the Raiders’ acquisitions of Davante Adams and Jakobi Meyers.

Now, amidst talks of a potential cap casualty, Renfrow’s departure from the Raiders seems imminent. The Steelers, in need of a reliable slot receiver, could capitalize on this opportunity. With Khan at the helm, orchestrating a low-risk trade akin to the Allen Robinson II deal from 2023 could be feasible. Alternatively, if Renfrow hits the free-agent market, the Steelers could secure his services at a discounted rate, leveraging the increased salary cap in 2024.

Renfrow’s experience and skill set could significantly bolster the Steelers’ receiving corps, providing much-needed consistency and depth. Moreover, his mentorship could prove invaluable in nurturing young talents like Calvin Austin III into impactful contributors on offense.

As discussions surrounding Renfrow’s future intensify, the Steelers find themselves at a crossroads. Undoing the Switzer trade and acquiring Renfrow could represent a pivotal move in Khan’s quest to reshape the team’s fortunes. Whether it’s through a trade or free agency, securing Renfrow’s services could be the key to unlocking the Steelers’ offensive potential in the upcoming season.
