Why Canterbury’s recent $3.3 million high-profile acquisition will take up a role in the center position, at least for the time being.

Canterbury’s marquee addition, Stephen Crichton, will kick off the season stationed in the center position, rather than at fullback, contributing to what promises to be one of the NRL’s most formidable left-edge attacks. While much buzz surrounds South Sydney’s left flank featuring Keaon Koloamatangi, Cody Walker, Jack Wighton, Latrell Mitchell, and Alex Johnston, Canterbury boasts Viliame Kikau, Matt Burton, Crichton, and Josh Addo-Carr.

The speculation over where three-time premiership winner Crichton, secured for over $800,000 annually, would start the season became a hot topic at Belmore during the offseason. However, due to a quad injury impeding Crichton’s fullback preparations, Blake Taaffe will initially take the helm at No.1. Crichton’s transition to fullback will hinge on Taaffe’s early-season performances.

While some may question why a player signed on a lucrative four-year deal worth over $3.3 million is stationed in the centers, Crichton’s prowess in both attack and defense is undeniable. His influence can significantly impact game outcomes from the center position.

Crichton, who was appointed Bulldogs captain, expressed enthusiasm about reuniting with former Panthers Burton and Kikau, alongside NSW Origin teammate Addo-Carr. He believes in his ability to elevate Burton’s performance, citing the latter’s recent quietness on the field.

Honored to lead Canterbury, Crichton draws from his experiences under notable leaders like Nathan Cleary, Issah Yeo, and James Tedesco but acknowledges this as his first stint as captain at any level.

Meanwhile, Brett Morris, the new Sydney Roosters’ NSW Cup coach, anticipates collaborating with former Origin representatives Dylan Napa and Michael Jennings. Napa’s captaincy of the Roosters’ fringe players in a significant trial victory over South Sydney showcases his leadership qualities, while Jennings’ return to training fuels hopes for his availability in reserve grade by round one.
