Byron Buxton makes a comeback to center field for the Twins following a 1.5-year absence due to knee issues.

Byron Buxton took to center field for the Minnesota Twins for the first time in 554 days, marking a significant return after enduring knee troubles that sidelined him for a year and a half.

Having recovered from consecutive seasons disrupted by knee surgeries, the former 2022 All-Star made his presence felt in both the batter’s box and outfield during the Twins’ 3-3 tie against the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday.

Except for a brief seven-inning stint with Triple-A St. Paul on a rehabilitation assignment last summer, Buxton hadn’t patrolled center field since sustaining an injury while diving for a ball on August 22, 2022.

Recognized as the 2017 Rawlings Platinum Glove winner for his exceptional defensive prowess, Buxton appeared in 85 games for the Twins in 2023, primarily as a designated hitter due to lingering issues with his right knee.

Though he didn’t make any catches on Tuesday, fielding just two balls hit his way, the significance lay in his return to the field.

Twins manager Rocco Baldelli remarked, “Great to see him flying around the field. He’s looked good all spring. He looks strong and he looks explosive right now. Good day for him and a good day for all of us.”

Buxton, now 30, has struggled with injuries throughout his career, with his last complete season dating back to 2017 when he played in 140 games. Despite his injury setbacks, Buxton remains optimistic, feeling physically robust for the first time in two years.

Following a challenging season where he batted .207 with 17 home runs and 42 RBIs, Buxton underwent surgery last October to remove plica tissue from his knee, alleviating the persistent pain he described as akin to a stabbing sensation.

As he navigates through spring training, Buxton has been reveling in his newfound health, displaying his athleticism during workouts, batting practices, and field drills. Despite initial apprehension about returning to outfield duties, Buxton approached the game with confidence, demonstrating his readiness to handle any challenges that come his way.

While he refrained from diving during spring training, Buxton’s enthusiasm for being back on the field was palpable as he eagerly awaits the regular season.
