The Lions anticipate that Jameson Williams will vie for a permanent starting position throughout 2024.
Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams (9) celebrates scoring the opening touchdown of the NFC Championship game held at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., on Sunday, January 28, 2024. The Detroit Lions competed against the San Francisco 49ers, with a spot in the Super Bowl at stake.
Jameson Williams has shown significant improvement, particularly towards the latter part of the season. As he enters his third year, the Detroit Lions are expecting even greater contributions from the dynamic wide receiver.
Williams’ first two seasons were marred by setbacks, including an ACL injury during his time at Alabama and a suspension for multiple games due to gambling. Despite a challenging start to the recent season, the 2022 first-round draft pick began to showcase his potential as a valuable asset for the team.
Throughout Williams’ ups and downs, the Lions have consistently voiced their support for him, emphasizing that player development varies and expressing satisfaction with his progress heading into the offseason. While his performance has yet to fully meet the expectations associated with his draft position, there is a sense within the organization that he is on the cusp of achieving more.
Lions head coach Dan Campbell acknowledged Williams’ growth, highlighting his dedication to improvement and his increasing reliability within the offense as the season progressed.
“Yeah, he progressed. When he was able to come back off, and we got him Week 4 of the season, after the, you know, he had the suspension, all we asked of him was growth,” Campbell remarked at the scouting combine on Tuesday. “Just get better, just get a little bit better and become one of the guys, somebody we can rely on in this offense. Just do your job. That’s exactly what he did.
“And you could see by the end of the year, we really felt like he started to come into his own.”
