David James, the former England and Liverpool goalkeeper, has expressed admiration for Celtic target Caoimhin Kelleher, suggesting that Kelleher could serve as a long-term solution for Liverpool once Alisson eventually departs. James believes that Kelleher’s decision to remain at Liverpool for now is commendable.

This indicates James’s belief that Kelleher should refrain from joining Celtic, who are also seeking a long-term goalkeeper solution with Joe Hart expected to retire after the 2023/24 season.

James, who represented England 53 times between 1997 and 2010, had a notable club career with teams like West Ham United, Portsmouth, and Bristol City before retiring in 2014.

In an interview with Sky Sports [via the Daily Record], James remarked, “I’m uncertain about what the ideal trajectory of his career should be. However, by winning trophies, which is often a primary ambition for footballers, he’s achieving success. Despite not being the outright number one goalkeeper, he’s contributing to Liverpool’s trophy haul.”

“Alisson won’t remain indefinitely, even if he’s currently the world’s best goalkeeper. Given Kelleher’s consistent trophy wins with Liverpool, it’s plausible that he’ll eventually assume the top spot.”

“I can’t envision many other clubs, particularly in England, where Kelleher would either secure the top goalkeeper position or accumulate as many trophies as he could at Liverpool. Therefore, I believe he’s making the correct decision by staying put.”
