Trade Proposal: Is a Top Cornerback from the Kansas City Chiefs Available for Trade to the Los Angeles Rams?
The Los Angeles Rams’ defensive setup might not be equipped for a Super Bowl run. This observation isn’t a criticism of general manager Les Snead’s efforts or a judgment on the coaching staff’s abilities. However, there’s significant room for improvement in Los Angeles. In essence, teams with weak secondaries that can’t compensate with an exceptional pass rush will likely struggle in today’s pass-heavy NFL. The Rams are prepared to invest money and NFL Draft picks into addressing this issue, but could they also explore options in the trade market?
The salary cap imposes constraints, sometimes necessitating the trade of star players to maintain the core of a team. The reigning Super Bowl champions, the Kansas City Chiefs, might find themselves in this situation as they aim for consecutive titles. Although cornerback L’Jarius Sneed is likely to be franchise-tagged, a trade could be considered if a contract extension cannot be agreed upon. According to Bleacher Report, the Los Angeles Rams are among the teams that should inquire about Sneed’s availability.
“If Sneed is attainable for a Day 2 draft pick, Snead and the Rams would be wise to pursue him,” wrote Kristopher Knox. “Los Angeles’ playoff aspirations are buoyed by emerging talents like Puka Nacua, Kyren Williams, and Kobie Turner. Improving a pass defense that ranked 20th in yards allowed last season would enhance the Rams’ competitive window. Sneed’s youth makes him a valuable long-term asset, even after veterans like Donald, Stafford, and Kupp have moved on.”
Sneed has established himself as one of the premier cornerbacks in the league, likely deserving of a lucrative contract extension—something within the Rams’ financial reach. His on-field performance underscores his value. Sneed was ranked as the 26th-best cornerback by Pro Football Focus, significantly ahead of the Rams’ top qualifier last season, Ahkello Witherspoon (ranked 47th). Los Angeles lacks a playmaker of his caliber in their secondary. Sneed also recorded among the most pass breakups among cornerbacks, along with two interceptions. Additionally, he allowed the fifth-lowest passer rating when in coverage.
While Sneed’s high penalty count (17) might raise concerns, indicating potential for undisciplined play, there’s no denying his ability to impact games positively. Snead hasn’t ruled out trading the team’s first-round draft pick, but there’s a valid argument for retaining it. However, as draft picks become less valuable in later rounds, the Rams may hope the Chiefs entertain a proposal involving Sneed.
