Orlando Pirates provide an update on goalkeeper Melusi Buthelezi’s ‘traumatic experience’ following a hijacking incident.

According to the Intelligence Bureau of South Africa, Buthelezi experienced a carjacking while driving in Thokoza, Ekhuruleni, Gauteng on Thursday evening. The Intelligence Bureau reported that the Orlando Pirates goalkeeper was held captive by the carjackers. However, Pirates have confirmed that the goalkeeper is safe and uninjured.

“Yes, it is accurate. Our goalkeeper Mr. Melusi Buthelezi was involved in a carjacking last night,” confirmed Pirates Media and Communications to Soccer Laduma. “The player is safe and uninjured. We are relieved that he is safe and unharmed, and we would like to request that Melusi be given privacy to recover from this distressing incident.”

This is not the first time Buthelezi has experienced a carjacking. In February 2022, he was stabbed during a carjacking incident while he was still with TS Galaxy, and the incident occurred in Soweto. Additionally, another Orlando Pirates player, Vincent Pule, was carjacked in July 2022 and held captive overnight before being released.
