Bulldogs winger shares thoughts on Crichton’s appointment as captain

Bulldogs winger Jacob Kiraz has shared his thoughts on the team’s decision to appoint new recruit Stephen Crichton as captain, replacing former Panthers center Matt Burton and hooker Reed Mahoney, as part of Cameron Ciraldo’s leadership group shake-up.

Despite Crichton’s relatively short career with only 99 games played, the three-time premiership winner from the Penrith Panthers has had the opportunity to learn from seasoned leaders like Apisai Koroisau, Nathan Cleary, and Isaah Yeo during his time at Penrith.

While the decision may have come as a surprise to fans and media, Kiraz revealed that it also caught many of the players off guard. However, he emphasized that Crichton’s natural leadership qualities quickly became evident, especially during his first week at the club.

Kiraz spoke highly of Crichton’s leadership skills, noting his ability to lead by example and integrate seamlessly into the team despite being new. Kiraz also mentioned Crichton’s reputation for being a bit of a prankster in the locker room, but emphasized that his leadership qualities are undeniable, backed by his impressive resume.

Cameron Ciraldo confirmed that both Mahoney and Burton were in agreement with the decision to appoint Crichton as captain for the 2024 season. However, he emphasized that Mahoney and Burton would continue to play leadership roles within the team.

Kiraz expressed that the decision to make Crichton captain didn’t come as a shock to the players, as they had witnessed his leadership qualities firsthand and recognized his potential to lead the team effectively.
