Three main takeaways from Commanders GM Adam Peters’ press conference at the combine.

As speculation swirls around potential additions to the Washington Commanders’ quarterback roster, rumors are also emerging regarding the future prospects of Sam Howell in 2024. Recent reports indicate that there would be considerable interest in Howell if he were made available for trade by his current team. Ralph Vacchiano from FOX Sports suggests that such a move could lead to Adam Peters, the Commanders’ General Manager, acquiring another third-round pick if a bidding war were to unfold.

Peters expressed admiration for Howell after spending time with the former first-round pick during a recent stroll around Commanders Park. While speaking with Sports Illustrated, the general manager hinted at the possibility of Howell getting another opportunity as a starter in 2024. However, Peters also acknowledged that they were still in the early stages of evaluating their options and nothing had been confirmed yet.

“We still have a lot of work to do on what we’re going to do, whether it’s with that pick or later. We really like what we have in Sam right now, so we’re really excited about that too. It’s funny, I learned this from John Lynch. When you’re sitting in your office all day, you kind of just get in this rut where you’re just like, it’s dark, you got all these weird lights and you need to get out. So Sam came to the facility a couple of weeks ago and got a chance to hang out, and instead of sitting in my office, we just took a walk around Commanders Park, around the fields, and got to know him a little bit better. So I feel really good about him too. So, we got a lot of different things we can do, but still really excited about him.” – Adam Peters via Sports Illustrated

Howell faced numerous challenges last season, including working under a head coach with an uncertain future and an offensive coordinator who failed to implement a balanced scheme. Additionally, he endured playing behind a struggling offensive line, resulting in him being sacked more than any other quarterback in the NFL in 2023.

While some fans are eager to see how Howell performs with a more supportive surrounding cast, the prospect of having the No. 2 overall selection in the upcoming draft complicates his position as Washington’s starting quarterback.
