Historical selection of players for the UNC Tar Heels in the NCAA tournament

The University of North Carolina Tar Heels boast the third-highest win count in men’s college basketball history. With a rich history featuring a plethora of iconic players, selecting the best player for each position is an arduous task.

Chapel Hill has served as a hub for remarkable talent, with numerous players etching their names in the annals of basketball history while donning the UNC jersey.

Even beyond the starting lineup, the bench players for the Tar Heels comprise a formidable squad capable of championship success. Here’s my ideal lineup for North Carolina, featuring some of the greatest players to come off the bench:

Center:
Sam Perkins (1980-84)

While nearly every member of this starting lineup excels in the paint, Sam Perkins stood out with remarkable statistics as a center for the Tar Heels.

Perkins boasted impressive averages of 8.8 rebounds, 1.8 blocks, and 15.9 points per game throughout his four-year tenure in Chapel Hill.

Despite never holding a starting role amidst the presence of basketball legends like Michael Jordan and James Worthy, Perkins showcased his talent by consistently delivering double-doubles off the bench. By the end of his collegiate career, he had accumulated 1,000 minutes on the court.
