A prominent midfielder expresses confidence that off-season alterations will benefit the Bulldogs under Bevo.

Beveridge’s well-publicized tension with football chief Chris Grant, and a restructuring to have the coach reporting to Matt Egan instead, were the focal points of the off-season for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs also underwent an external review of their football department and revamped their coaching staff, bringing in Daniel Pratt, Alex Johnson, and Jarryn Geary.

Bontempelli, who has played nine out of his 10 seasons under Beveridge, believes the adjustments in the football department have allowed the coach to invest more in the players.

“I’ve noticed increased availability to some extent,” he said. “At different times, he’s had a lot on his plate managing various programs. With the new additions, he now has the opportunity to focus on other areas, which I think is positive. There’s a sense of optimism and energy towards the upcoming season.”

Regarding potential friction before the changes, Bontempelli stated, “Not that I really noticed, to be honest. The new additions have played specific roles and structurally, things appear more organized. Our football program has progressed, which benefits us as players.”

Bontempelli also acknowledged the impact of the club’s relocation from Whitten Oval due to redevelopment last year and emphasized the importance of consistency during the preseason as they aim for a return to the finals.

“We missed out on the finals last year, which is always disappointing for players. We’re striving for improvement,” he explained. “The group is in a good position physically and mentally. With a few changes and new faces adding value in a short time, there’s a high level of optimism about starting the season better than last year.”
