NBA Most Valuable Player Standings: Nikola Jokić Leads, Jayson Tatum Makes an Appearance in the Race
This season’s NBA MVP race is arguably the most competitive of the decade thus far, with top contenders continuing to vie for position as the playoffs draw near. This week introduces a new contender into the top five, posing a significant challenge to those who have been leading the charge. Let’s delve into the latest rankings.
(All statistics are accurate as of March 1st. Previous rankings can be found here.)
1. Nikola Jokić
Heading into the All-Star break, Jokić’s hold on the top spot seemed to be slipping, with the Denver Nuggets experiencing a three-game losing streak and facing the possibility of sliding down the standings. However, both the Nuggets and Jokić have surged since the break, with Denver winning five consecutive games, during which Jokić recorded a triple-double in each of the first four victories.
2. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
In his last five games, Gilgeous-Alexander has consistently produced impressive scoring performances, tallying 31, 30, 36, 31, and 31 points, showcasing remarkable scoring consistency with 44 such high-scoring nights throughout the season.
3. Luka Dončić
Despite the Dallas Mavericks cooling off slightly post-trade deadline, Dončić has maintained his exceptional form, scoring 33, 45, 30, and 37 points in their recent games. He has also displayed excellent playmaking, amassing 41 assists in his last three outings and recording triple-doubles in his last two games.
4. Giannis Antetokounmpo
Following a 3–7 stretch before the break, the Milwaukee Bucks have rebounded with five consecutive victories. Antetokounmpo’s standout performance was a 46-point display against the Chicago Bulls. Additionally, under Doc Rivers’ guidance, the Bucks have notably improved defensively, climbing to 15th in defensive efficiency. Antetokounmpo’s ability to dominate on both ends of the floor could propel him higher in the rankings going forward.
5. Jayson Tatum
Tatum has received notable support from the Boston Celtics’ camp to contend for the MVP award, although such fervor may seem exaggerated. Nonetheless, Tatum undeniably presents a strong case for inclusion in the MVP conversation. Despite Boston’s overall strength as a team, Tatum’s individual excellence warrants recognition. Notably, he delivered an impressive performance in the Celtics’ commanding victory over the Mavericks, scoring 32 points on just 19 shot attempts.
