The Broncos save additional funds by releasing a tight end from their roster.

The Denver Broncos have made a move within their tight end unit as part of their ongoing efforts to trim their salary cap.

Although not as impactful as cutting Justin Simmons, the release of TE Chris Manhertz is still worth noting. This move, executed on Friday, enables the Broncos to free up a little over $2 million in salary cap space.

According to Mike Klis’s tweet, the precise amount of savings on the salary cap is $2.12 million. While Manhertz’s contributions were primarily in blocking rather than catching passes, he was considered an effective run-blocker. Notably, he previously worked with head coach Sean Payton during their time together in New Orleans in 2016, before stints with Carolina and Jacksonville prior to joining Denver.

The Broncos’ tight end room struggled notably in the previous season, with Greg Dulcich facing injury setbacks despite high expectations. Meanwhile, Adam Trautman, who filled the role adequately, is currently a free agent, leaving uncertainty about his potential return.

While the Broncos recognize the need to address the tight end position during the offseason, Manhertz is not part of their future plans. Nevertheless, his release allows the team to save money as they navigate their roster adjustments.
