“We’re all behind him”: Rabbitohs rally around Latrell Mitchell following remarks from Mundine.
Keaon Koloamatangi has come to the defense of his South Sydney teammate, Latrell Mitchell, following criticism from Anthony Mundine. Mundine’s remarks, stemming from a racism controversy involving Ezra Mam and Spencer Leniu, targeted Mitchell’s stance on the issue. The dispute originated on social media, with Mundine backing Leniu and denying any racial connotation to Mam being called a ‘monkey’. Mitchell strongly rebuked Mundine’s position, labeling it as “absolute nonsense” and urging him to “do better”.
In response to Mitchell’s comments, Mundine launched a series of criticisms on Facebook, questioning Mitchell’s credibility to speak on the matter. Koloamatangi, however, defended Mitchell’s right to voice his opinion, citing his contributions both on and off the field. He emphasized Mitchell’s significant impact as a role model, particularly within the Indigenous community, praising his outspokenness and leadership.
Despite Mundine’s suggestions that Mitchell should focus solely on his football performance, Mitchell has consistently advocated for Indigenous issues and stood against racial insensitivity throughout his career. Koloamatangi highlighted Mitchell’s recent strong performances and stressed his importance to the team. He urged critics to consider Mitchell’s overall contributions and resilience, asserting that Mitchell’s resilience and experience would see him through such challenges.
