Three factors warrant acknowledging the NY Islanders defense for its recent revival.

The NY Islanders are currently the most formidable team in the National Hockey League, having clinched six consecutive victories, marking their lengthiest winning streak since their nine-game run back in March 2022. This impressive resurgence has transformed them from a squad lacking direction to a legitimate playoff contender. Their recent triumph against the Anaheim Ducks at the Honda Center holds significant importance beyond a typical win in California. It propelled them to a tie for the second wild-card spot with the Detroit Red Wings, while also placing them just two points behind the top wild-card team, the Tampa Bay Lightning, and the third-place Philadelphia Flyers in the Metropolitan Division.

To state that the Islanders have merely turned their season around would be an understatement. Their offense has demonstrated its most dominant form in years, tallying an impressive 30 goals over the past six games. Notably, the first line has become a potent goal-scoring unit across all three positions, while even the third line has contributed to the scoring. Despite the spotlight being predominantly on the forwards, the most noteworthy improvement lies in the performance of the defensemen under head coach Patrick Roy’s ‘2-on-1’ system, a stark contrast to the days of Lane Lambert’s coaching tenure.

Consider the following statistics:

– The defense has amassed 4 goals and 16 assists (20 points) in the last six games.
– With the exception of one defenseman, each player has exhibited improvement in various aspects of their game since Roy took charge.
– Noah Dobson stands out as a consistent point producer, boasting 56 points through 63 games in the ongoing season, highlighting his invaluable contribution to the team.
– Other defensemen such as Sebastian Aho, Ryan Pulock, and Alexander Romanov have also made offensive contributions during this winning streak.
– Noteworthy performances include the combination of Aho and Mike Reilly, who have generated a surprising number of shots on goal for a bottom pairing, and Adam Pelech’s return to his all-star form, evident in his four assists in the last five games.
