Safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson reportedly re-signs with the Philadelphia Eagles on a three-year contract.

Gardner-Johnson, aged 26, spent most of the 2023 season on the sidelines for the Lions due to a pectoral muscle tear in Week 2. During his limited play, he participated in three regular season matches, tallying 16 tackles, one interception, and three pass deflections. Despite the setback, he returned for Detroit’s three playoff appearances, where he managed 12 tackles and secured one interception before their loss in the NFC championship against the San Francisco 49ers.

His return to the Philadelphia Eagles brings much-needed adaptability to their secondary, particularly following the release of starting slot cornerback Avonte Maddox. Gardner-Johnson’s ability to cover both safety and slot positions adds depth to the Eagles’ defensive lineup.

Before the 2022 season, Gardner-Johnson was traded from the New Orleans Saints to the Eagles, contributing to their Super Bowl run. He achieved career-high stats with 67 tackles and led the NFL with six interceptions during that season.

Although the Eagles prioritized retaining Gardner-Johnson in the 2023 offseason, negotiations fell through, prompting him to explore free agency. Despite the Eagles’ multi-year offer, he opted to test the market. Consequently, the Eagles redirected their focus, signing cornerback James Bradberry and extending cornerback Darius Slay.

Unable to secure the desired contract, Gardner-Johnson signed a one-year, $6.5 million deal with the Lions. Following his departure, he made critical remarks about Philadelphia fans during a Twitch livestream.

The Eagles have been active in free agency, adding former New England Patriots wide receiver DeVante Parker, former New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley, former New York Jets edge rusher Bryce Huff, and other acquisitions.
