The Florida Panthers secure the services of prolific goal-scoring winger Vladimir Tarasenko.
The Florida Panthers, aiming to enhance their scoring abilities, have acquired Vladimir Tarasenko from the Ottawa Senators with 50% of his salary retained, prior to the 2023-24 NHL Trade Deadline.
Tarasenko, who has recorded 17 goals and 24 assists, totaling 41 points in 57 games with the Senators this season, has long been rumored to desire a move to a competitive Stanley Cup contender. It appears he may have found a temporary home with the Panthers. However, given the impending need to re-sign key players like Sam Reinhart, Brandon Montour, and Gustav Forsling, Tarasenko is likely viewed as a rental player, albeit a highly impactful one. Known for his dynamic play on both ends of the ice, Tarasenko’s goal-scoring prowess is precisely what the Panthers require, particularly on their second powerplay unit. Surrounded by the Panthers’ strong contingent of two-way players, Tarasenko is expected to excel, even during 5v5 play.
In exchange for Tarasenko, the Panthers have sent a conditional 2024 4th round pick (upgraded to a 2026 3rd round pick if the Panthers secure the Stanley Cup) and a 2025 3rd round pick to the Senators. This demonstrates Bill Zito’s willingness to invest draft assets in bolstering the Panthers’ chances of winning the Stanley Cup. Despite the further reduction of the Panthers’ draft capital, this trade is considered a notable victory for Zito and his team. With the Panthers having approximately $5 million in deadline cap space prior to this trade, and Tarasenko’s cap hit now set at $2.5 million after salary retention, it remains to be seen whether Zito has concluded his roster adjustments or if he still has more moves planned. Time will tell as the week progresses.
