Two potential replacements for Darren Waller if he decides to retire from the New York Giants at the tight end position.
The New York Giants have experienced a whirlwind of activity this week. Initially, they faced setbacks with the departure of key players Saquon Barkley and Xavier McKinney in free agency. However, they swiftly bolstered their offensive line by adding free agents Jon Runyan, Jermaine Eluemunor, Austin Schlottmann, and Aaron Stinnie.
Furthermore, they made significant acquisitions, securing Devin Singletary as their new starting running back and Drew Lock as backup quarterback to Daniel Jones. Yet, their most notable move came with a blockbuster trade to acquire Brian Burns.
Nevertheless, their excitement may be dampened as reports suggest tight end Darren Waller is considering retirement. Waller was acquired from the Raiders last offseason but struggled with hamstring injuries, limiting his appearances to 11 games. Despite setbacks, the 31-year-old still managed to contribute significantly, ranking second on the team with 52 receptions for 552 yards and a touchdown.
Should Waller opt for retirement, the Giants may turn to third-year-pro Daniel Bellinger as his replacement. Bellinger showed promise in his rookie season, starting 11 games and recording 30 receptions for 268 yards and two touchdowns. Despite injury setbacks, he remained productive, catching 25 of 28 targets for 255 yards last season.
General manager Joe Schoen has expressed confidence in Bellinger, drafting him with the 112th overall pick. With the potential opportunity, Bellinger could emerge as a breakout player for the Giants in the upcoming season.
