Why Duncan Robinson is in prime position to deliver on his $90 million contract

Following his achievement as the NBA’s quickest player to reach 1,000 three-pointers, Duncan Robinson of the Miami Heat reflected on his journey at the Pistons’ Little Ceasar Arena.

Robinson expressed, to the Bally Sports Sun Heat, his gratitude for the unconventional path he took to reach this point. Despite facing initial challenges with no Division I or II offers after high school and going undrafted in 2018 before being picked up by the Heat, Robinson acknowledged the value of his experiences.

The term “circuitous” aptly describes Robinson’s route to the NBA, encompassing both his unconventional beginnings and recent ups and downs, transitioning from an inspiring story to facing criticism over his contract.

With the Heat’s playoff hopes hanging in the balance, Robinson’s performance is crucial. To justify his hefty $90 million contract signed in 2021, he must dispel any doubts about his value to the team, particularly amid a challenging upcoming schedule.

Initially, Robinson’s contract drew skepticism from some league insiders, labeling it as the worst in the NBA. His underwhelming performance in the 2022 season, marked by career lows in various statistics and a lackluster playoff showing, fueled doubts about the Heat’s investment.

Despite attempts to improve, including a coaching change and Robinson’s surgery on his right hand, his struggles persisted throughout the 2022-23 season. Miami’s front office faced increasing regret over the deal, compounded by Robinson’s declining output and limited trade prospects.

However, Robinson began to reverse the narrative during the 2023 playoffs, showcasing improved form and making significant contributions to the Heat’s success, particularly in a standout performance against the Milwaukee Bucks.

Presently, Robinson has continued to elevate his game, reclaiming his role as a valuable scorer for the Heat. His recent milestone of scoring 30 points underscores his resurgence, with improved statistics across the board since rejoining the starting lineup.

Robinson’s resurgence has silenced critics and justified the Heat’s investment in him. While the contract initially drew scrutiny, its purpose was always to solidify Robinson’s role as a foundational player in Miami’s pursuit of a championship during the Butler era.
