PREVIEW OF THE MATCH: Waterford FC vs. Derry City FC
This Friday, the Blues will travel to Derry after defeating St. Patrick’s Athletic 3–0 at home on Monday night at the RSC.
Seven minutes in, Padraig Amond headed in a looping cross from Maleace Asamoah to open the score. Thirty-four minutes later, Anto Breslin’s close-range strike gave the visitors an equalizer.
Amond gave the Blues a well-earned lead at halftime by scoring just before the break after Pitaluga, the Pats’ goalkeeper, made a mistake.
With twenty minutes remaining, Asamoah finally got into the act, picking up a loose ball on the halfway line and going past the visiting team’s defense to give the Blues a well-earned 3-1 victory. With four games played, Keith Long’s team now sits in third place in the SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division table.
With Derry City predicted to contend for the league crown this year, the Blues will now look to secure their second away victory of the year.
FC Derry City
The Ruaidhrí Higgins team is now in second place in the SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division after a great start to their 2024 campaign, which saw them earn eight points from their first four games.
In their season opener, the Candystripes defeated Drogheda United by a score of two goals to one. The next week, they traveled to Sligo Rovers and came away with a point. After Higgins’ team defeated St. Patrick’s Athletic 2-1 last Friday thanks to a late goal from Danny Mullen, City earned a point against Shamrock Rovers on Monday night despite the Candystripes conceding a late equalizer.
The Derry City team has a ton of Premier Division experience, so Friday night will be a tough game for the Blues.
