Sources: ESPN Red Sox Elbow player Lucas Giolito could miss the season
Giolito will travel to Birmingham, Alabama on Monday for a second opinion with Dr. Jeffrey R. Dugas as they discuss treatment options, which may include surgery, manager Alex Cora informed reporters on Wednesday.
Along with right-hander Cooper Criswell and reliever Liam Hendriks, who is anticipated to miss the majority of 2024 following Tommy John surgery, Giolito, 29, was one of just three free agents signed by the Red Sox during the winter. Though Red Sox chairman Tom Werner had stated early in the offseason that the team would pursue free agency “full throttle,” Giolito’s two-year, $38.5 million contract accounted for more than three-quarters of the team’s $49.5 million expenditure, which is the 13th highest in Major League Baseball.

The Red Sox, who have finished in last place three times in the past four seasons, will have a rotating lineup going into 2024. In order to make room for Giolito in the rotation in the absence of other reliable starters, Boston acquired left-hander Chris Sale in the summer. Giolito is a seasoned pitcher.
