Cowboys Pay Heartfelt Homage to Leighton Vander Esch Following Retirement Declaration
Dallas Cowboys linebacker Leighton Vander Esch officially declared his retirement from the NFL on Monday. The former first-round draft pick, recognized as one of the league’s top young linebackers, faced setbacks due to neck injuries.
Released by the Cowboys last week due to a failed physical designation, Vander Esch’s departure from Dallas marked the conclusion of his NFL career. During his six-year tenure with the team, the former Boise State standout achieved notable success, including two seasons with over 90 tackles and accolades such as a Pro Bowl selection and second-team All-Pro honors in his rookie year.
In the recently concluded season, Vander Esch’s playing time was limited to five games due to placement on injured reserve. Despite this, he managed to contribute with 30 combined tackles, a fumble recovery, and a defensive touchdown.
The Dallas Cowboys paid tribute to the veteran linebacker with a touching homage, highlighting significant moments from his career, including his draft day call from team owner Jerry Jones and impactful plays on the field. Vander Esch’s versatility in coverage and fearlessness in confronting ball carriers were notable aspects of his game.
Though his time with the Cowboys spanned only six seasons, Vander Esch, known as the “Wolf Hunter,” made a lasting impact on the organization and will be remembered as one of the era’s standout linebackers.
