Renowned coach Joe Torre reappears at a New York Yankees spring training match.
Left-handed pitcher Carlos Rodón of the New York Yankees dominated the Philadelphia Phillies during a Monday afternoon game at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa.
The seasoned player held a no-hitter until the sixth inning, extending it by another two outs, totaling 5.2 no-hit innings. However, being a Spring Training game, Rodón wasn’t allowed to finish the game.
Instead of manager Aaron Boone making the change, former Yankees manager Joe Torre emerged from the dugout to signal for a pitching change, ending Rodón’s impressive performance. The crowd cheered, partly for Rodón’s excellence and partly to honor Torre.
Torre, a nine-time All-Star, two-time Manager of the Year, and Hall of Famer, was dressed in full Yankees uniform as he conversed with Rodón on the mound. The infielders grinned as Torre took the ball from Rodón and brought in right-hander Ian Hamilton.
Torre had led the Yankees to six AL pennants and four World Series titles from 1996 to 2007. After a stint with the Los Angeles Dodgers, he served as MLB’s chief baseball officer from 2011 to 2020.
Recently, the 83-year-old Torre had visited the Yankees’ Spring Training facilities as a guest instructor.
With Torre in the dugout, the Yankees defeated the Phillies 4-3, breaking a 1-5 slump in Grapefruit League play.
