NFC East updates: Talks about quarterbacks for the Giants and Eagles, while Washington facilitates a reunion with running backs.
Russell Wilson opted to join the Steelers following discussions with the Giants, during which he received no assurance of starting over Daniel Jones if he signed with them. According to TheAthletic.com, the Giants did not guarantee playing time during their meeting with Wilson, which occurred prior to his meeting with the Steelers.
Upon joining the Steelers, Wilson was promptly designated as the starting quarterback after the team traded away Kenny Pickett. Despite later acquiring Justin Fields, the Steelers have indicated that Fields will serve as Wilson’s backup.
Meanwhile, the Giants signed Drew Lock, who stated during his introductory press conference that he was informed Jones holds the starting position.
Both Wilson and Jones could potentially be benched during the season. While the Steelers have committed to Wilson for just one year, the Giants may be inclined to move on from Jones if his performance mirrors last year’s struggles. Presently, the starting role belongs to Wilson in Pittsburgh, a decision he made after being informed that Jones holds the starting position in New York.
As for the Eagles, they prioritized quarterback depth, leading to the acquisition of Kenny Pickett from the Steelers. This move raised questions about whether the Eagles should have waited for Justin Fields instead, considering they reportedly attempted to trade for him before he joined the Steelers for less compensation.
