£22m goalkeeper may be Celtic’s ideal Joe Hart replacement, he could be free this summer

Celtic’s pursuit of a new goalkeeper took an unexpected turn a few weeks ago with Joe Hart’s announcement of his retirement at the season’s end. The accomplished goalkeeper, known for his treble-winning feats, will soon conclude his career, ideally with another league title secured and a Scottish Cup victory to his name.

Since his transfer from Spurs for £1 million nearly three years ago, Hart has proven to be an indispensable asset for Celtic. Despite his flaws, the veteran goalkeeper has come through in numerous crucial moments this season, making his replacement a daunting task. Celtic supporters, who have developed a deep affection for Hart over the years, will undoubtedly feel his absence keenly.

The question now arises: who will step into his shoes? While it’s uncertain if Celtic has a list of potential replacements, I propose a candidate who could fit the bill and come at no cost this summer.

The current goalkeeper for Napoli has enjoyed an impressive season with the Italian club. Having won both Serie A and the Italian Cup, Meret’s contract is set to expire this summer. Acquired by Napoli in 2018 for €25 million (£22 million) from Udinese, Meret presents a compelling option for Celtic’s goalkeeper vacancy. ESPN
