Force stun Reds to secure their first win of the Super Rugby campaign.
The Western Force delivered a dominant performance, scoring six tries to upset the Queensland Reds 40-31 in their Super Rugby Pacific clash at Perth’s HBF Park.
Taking an early 21-0 lead within 32 minutes, the Force maintained control, reaching 40-19 with 16 minutes left. Despite a late resurgence from the Reds, who scored tries through Fraser McReight and Jock Campbell, narrowing the gap to nine points with five minutes remaining, the Force held their ground, denying the Reds both a win and a bonus point.
This victory marked the Force’s first win of the season, a remarkable feat that saw the renowned Crusaders (0-5) drop to the bottom of the ladder, while Queensland (3-2) slipped from second to fifth.
Force captain Jeremy Williams described the win as “unreal,” praising his team’s discipline, patience, and execution on the field, as well as their solid defensive performance.
The Force, led by coach Simon Cron, entered the match with a 0-4 record, determined to turn things around. Their tenacious defense early in the game paid off, allowing them to capitalize on opportunities and secure a commanding lead.
Despite the Reds’ attempts at a comeback, highlighted by Tate McDermott’s two tries and Carlo Tizzano’s impressive run to the line, it wasn’t enough to overcome the Force’s lead.
Unfortunately, the Force suffered losses with Williams and flanker Will Harris sidelined due to injury, while Reds center Josh Flook also left the field after a head knock.
