The conflict began when Zion Williamson, a forward for the Pelicans, stole the ball from Butler and attempted a layup. Kevin Love, a forward for the Heat, intervened by wrapping up Williamson, who believed it was to prevent him from falling, at the 11:19 mark of the fourth quarter.
Subsequently, Butler and Marshall engaged in a confrontation on the court, requiring intervention to separate them. Meanwhile, Alvarado and Bryant began fighting near the scorer’s table after the initial altercation was resolved.
As a result, Butler, Marshall, Alvarado, and Bryant were ejected from the game, while Love received a common foul.
Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra expressed his opinion that Butler’s ejection seemed unwarranted, considering the nature of the incident was mere tangling and pushing, which had already caused him to miss the fourth quarter of the previous game. However, he acknowledged the decision and its consequences, emphasizing the undesirability of such escalation.
Butler faces the most significant financial penalty, amounting to $259,968, followed by Bryant with $52,308, and Jovic with $12,655. Alvarado will incur a loss of $37,988, while Marshall will lose $11,096.
Marshall served his suspension during the Pelicans’ loss to the Chicago Bulls. Alvarado missed that game and will also miss the upcoming road trip against the New York Knicks and Indiana Pacers.
Butler and Jovic were absent from the Heat’s defeat against the Kings. Bryant will remain unavailable for the remainder of Miami’s road trip, which includes games against Portland and Denver.
