Eli Gold, the veteran play-by-play broadcaster known for his tenure with Alabama football, has confirmed that he won’t be returning for the 2024 season, as reported by AL.com and initially by the Tuscaloosa News.
Having battled cancer, Gold was absent from the 2022 season but made a comeback in 2023, covering the Crimson Tide’s home games and the Iron Bowl at Auburn. Chris Stewart, the long-serving announcer for Alabama basketball, filled in for Gold during his previous absences and is set to continue in both roles next season, as announced by the University of Alabama.
Jim Carabin, the vice president and general manager of Crimson Tide Sports Network, expressed gratitude for Gold’s contributions over the years and welcomed Stewart’s seamless transition into the play-by-play role.
Stewart will debut in the role during the Crimson Tide’s A-Day game on April 13, having been associated with CTSN since 1998.
Throughout his time in Tuscaloosa, Gold called seven national titles, including all six under Nick Saban and the 1992 championship under Gene Stallings, earning him a place in the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame. Describing his broadcasting style simply as “professional describing,” Gold reflected on his career during an interview with AL.com.
Apart from his association with the Crimson Tide, Gold also had a significant presence in NASCAR races for the Motor Racing Network. Residing in Birmingham, he has lent his voice to various sports events, including Birmingham Barons baseball games, UAB basketball, as well as NHL hockey and NFL football broadcasts.
