Clayton McMillan discusses the essence of the question amidst Whitelock rumors.

Chiefs coach Clayton McMillan has offered insights regarding the potential return of All Blacks legend Sam Whitelock to New Zealand.

Recent reports from the New Zealand Herald suggested that Whitelock is reconsidering his options for the upcoming international season after discussions with new All Blacks coach Scott Robertson. While currently playing alongside his brother at Pau in France, Whitelock shares a strong rapport with Robertson from their time together at the Crusaders.

With the Top 14 season concluding at the end of June, Whitelock, given Pau’s 12th position, could potentially become available earlier and eligible for All Blacks duties by returning to local competition before the All Blacks’ season begins against England on July 6.

McMillan, who experienced defeat against Whitelock and the Crusaders in last year’s Super Rugby Pacific final, acknowledges Whitelock’s immense influence in the sport. He deliberates on the balance between nurturing young locks by exposing them to game time versus accelerating their development through the mentorship of a seasoned player like Whitelock.

The Chiefs currently possess a strong cohort of young locks, including All Blacks Tupou Vaa’i and Josh Lord, with Naitoa Ah Kuoi providing depth off the bench. Player development, particularly at the lock position, is anticipated to be a focal point of Robertson’s tenure with the All Blacks, given the presumed retirements of Whitelock and Brodie Retallick.

The exact role Whitelock would assume within the team remains uncertain, but former All Black Sir John Kirwan advocates for his return, highlighting the importance of experienced players in crucial moments, especially considering the significant number of New Zealand players plying their trade overseas.
