The Brisbane Broncos have awarded head coach Kevin Walters a new contract—here’s why.
Kevin Walters has inked a fresh long-term agreement that will see him continue as the head coach of the Brisbane Broncos until at least the culmination of the 2026 season.
The Broncos recently extended Walters’ contract last season, originally slated to run until the following year. However, the team’s resurgence in the NRL has prompted the club to offer their esteemed figure an enhanced and prolonged deal.
Walters assumed his role at Red Hill during what could be considered one of the club’s lowest periods, following Anthony Seibold’s brief tenure that culminated in the Broncos receiving their inaugural wooden spoon in 2020.
A favored choice among disillusioned former players to rejuvenate the struggling club, Walters’ illustrious history with the team fueled his determination to restore them to the summit of the league ladder.
While his tenure encountered obstacles, including a 14th place finish in 2021, Walters demonstrated signs of progress in the subsequent year, with the team breaching the top eight before experiencing a dramatic downturn and concluding the season in ninth position.
Despite uncertainties regarding his long-term suitability, the club exhibited confidence in Walters, a faith almost vindicated in 2023 when his dynamic young squad advanced to the grand final for the first time in eight years, albeit suffering a heart-wrenching defeat to Penrith.
This defeat extended the Broncos’ quest for their first premiership since 2006, when Wayne Bennett guided them to the pinnacle of the sport. With his renewed contract, Walters aims to end this 18-year title drought while ascending to become Brisbane’s second longest-serving coach in history, trailing only the legendary master coach.
“It’s no secret how much I love the Broncos, and having the opportunity to coach this team, even for a single game, is an absolute honor for me,” expressed Walters.
