Live updates, score, and highlights from the Sweet 16 matchup between Gonzaga and Purdue in March Madness.

The Sweet 16 showdown between Purdue and Gonzaga features two teams with a history of NCAA Tournament setbacks.

Although Gonzaga, ranked No. 5, has enjoyed recent success with appearances in the NCAA championship game in 2017 and 2021, this current team presents a different dynamic. Unlike previous years, there isn’t a standout star player for Gonzaga. Instead, their offense is well-balanced, with four players averaging double-digit points and two more close behind with nine points each.

Leading Gonzaga’s charge is Graham Ike, averaging 16.4 points and 7.3 rebounds per game, alongside Anton Watson, who contributes 14.5 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. In the backcourt, Nolan Hickman and Ryan Nembhard guide the team’s offense, which ranks highly in offensive rating, efficiency, and points scored.

On the Purdue side, attention gravitates toward Zach Edey, a 7-foot-4 senior who dominates with 24.5 points and 12.1 rebounds per game. Edey’s imposing presence poses a challenge for any defense, especially given his proficiency at drawing fouls and converting free throws.

Gonzaga lacks a player of Edey’s size, making it imperative for a collective effort from Ike, Watson, Ben Gregg, and Braden Huff to contain him. Purdue’s depth extends beyond Edey, with guards Braden Smith, Lance Jones, and Fletcher Loyer all contributing double-digit scoring averages, complemented by sharpshooters like Mason Gillis.

The Boilermakers’ ability to spread the floor effectively creates opportunities for Edey inside. Gonzaga must not only contend with Edey but also limit the impact of Purdue’s guard trio to stay competitive.
