One Championship team who are facing a nervous end to the current campaign are QPR.

After a run of form that had briefly seen them look as though they were set to pull clear of the second-tier relegation zone, Marti Cifuentes’ side have taken just one point from their last three games.

That has seen them slip back to 19th in the table, and their advantage over the relegation zone has dropped from from six points to three, with three games of the season still to be played.

As a result, the clubs below them in the standings may still believe the Hoops are catchable, especially considering they have some tricky fixtures to come again Preston North End, Leeds United and Coventry City.

So if they do go down, there is a chance that questions will be asked about some of the business done by at Loftus Road in the transfer market, since the end of last season.

Chris Martin released by QPR last summer

One of those who did leave QPR at the end of the previous campaign, was Chris Martin. The striker had been brought into the club in February 2023 on a short-term deal.

Having made that move to Loftus Road, Martin then scored four goals in 16 Championship appearances for QPR, as they managed to avoid relegation from League One.

However, when his contract with the club expired last summer, the R’s elected not to renew it, instead allowing Martin to leave on a free transfer.

However, given that QPR is currently battling to stay out of the Championship’s bottom three, Martin’s performance this year may make his former team regret not signing him to a longer contract at the end of the previous campaign.

Bristol Rovers gains from the QPR contract announcement

Martin made his comeback to the game in September of last year when he signed with Bristol Rovers, a League One team, after leaving QPR during the summer.

The striker for the Gas has been playing fantastically ever since making that move. He has 16 goals in 38 games across all competitions for his current club.

Thanks to that, Bristol Rovers are now guaranteed to finish in the third division next season, and they are currently sitting in 14th place in the League One standings.
Martin has also been awarded a new contract at The Memorial Stadium, which will keep him there through the end of the following season with the possibility of one more 12-month extension.
Martin would therefore probably play for QPR the following season if they are relegated from the Championship, having previously faced Bristol Rovers.
Reuniting with Martin would serve as a reminder of what was probably a big mistake to let him go during the summer.
One major issue that QPR has faced this season is scoring goals. This season, only Sheffield Wednesday (36) and Rotherham United (32) have scored fewer Championship goals than the R’s (40). These two teams are the lowest in the division.

West Brom, Southampton, Sunderland, and QPR are preparing to trade for a winger.
Despite the circumstances surrounding his Oxford United contract, Josh Murphy has gained a lot of admirers in the Championship.

This means that if Martin had been available and playing as well as he has been for Bristol Rovers, those extra goals he could have scored could have given QPR the extra points they needed to be safe by now.

The fact that they would not have needed to pay a transfer fee to keep Martin at Loftus Road for this season—he just needed his contract extended—will only serve to exacerbate the situation.

In light of this, the choice made last summer to not extend the 35-year-old’s contract is one
