Fans are excitedly awaiting Caitlin Clark’s WNBA debut with the Indiana Fever, and one team veteran is prepared to support and welcome her, even if it means giving up her starting position.
Playing point guard at the same position as Clark, Erica Wheeler recently stated that she doesn’t see the number one overall draft pick coming to her squad as competition and wants to make sure Clark feels comfortable.
Wheeler reportedly told USA Today, “I don’t have hate in my heart; it’s just how I was raised.” “I want everyone in my vicinity to succeed. I still want to challenge you to be exceptional whether or not you are winning.
Thus, in my mind, I simply reasoned that if I go ahead of it, I’ll just make it comfortable straight away. Actually, I enjoy it since I’m a big sister. I enjoy lending a hand first. Therefore, being able to support her and be her big sister is refreshing for me,” Wheeler continued.Erica Wheeler #17 of the Indiana Fever talks to reporters during media day activities at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on May 1, 2024 in Indianapolis, Indiana

The big sister support has been well received; Clark expressed gratitude to Wheeler for treating her like a rookie. Clark described Wheeler as someone who “simply wants the best for people, no matter what,” according to USA Today.

“Having a veteran who truly wants the best for you is special; she will push me, hold me accountable, and find ways to help me learn, but at the same time, she will have my back every single day, and that’s something I’m really grateful for coming into this league,” Clark continued.
The Indiana Fever selected the 22-year-old basketball star, who set records with the Iowa Hawkeyes, first overall in the 2024 WNBA Draft last month.
