With just three starts for Adams in the Championship, Erol Bulut made it obvious that he wasn’t planning on keeping him at Cardiff.
Since joining them from Forest Green Rovers, the former League Two champion has given the 49-year-old the midfield player he’s been lacking.
Sometimes all it takes for a player to demonstrate to a manager his full potential is to go out on loan, and Adams has done just that at Derby, where Bulut is prepared to evaluate his future.
“I gave him my congratulations on winning,” Bulut stated according to Wales Online. “They were given promotions. He played a significant role during the season and greatly aided the team’s promotion.
“Let’s see how this new season plays out if we are all together here. He is still a Cardiff City player, with a contract in place. Therefore, we’ll have to wait and see how he, his management, and the teams—Cardiff City and Derby—think.
“I believe they took him because they showed a great deal of interest in him. However, they must speak with our club if they wish to sign him permanently.
Derby County has the best chance of signing Ebou Adams.
The only drawback to Adams giving a terrific performance at Derby is that his value increased dramatically.
Cardiff might have accepted in January if the Rams had been permitted to submit a £250,000 offer and weren’t constrained by EFL regulations.
But the club is asking for twice that amount, which isn’t unreasonable, given how well he’s performed and the fact that the Bluebirds would technically be selling to a rival team in the Championship.
Adams is getting close to his prime years and has proven to be one of the greatest defensive midfielders in League One. If he can continue to improve his play in the second division and perhaps even sharpen his technical skills, he will be well worth the investment.
Adams looks to be in Derby’s grasp; the only question now is whether the two teams can agree on a transfer fee.
